Title Cypress Hills National Cemetery
Date 08/12/1927
Year Range from 1921
Year Range to 1930
Description Elton's notes call this the War Veterans' Cemetery on Jamaica Avenue in Brooklyn, N.Y. Research has shown that this is likely a shot of the Cypress Hills National Cemetery. The shot is taken from a distance that makes a powerful statement out of the serried rows of gravestones.

Cypress National contains war burials from the time of the Civil War until 1954. In fact, it is separated into three sections: The Union Grounds (containing the graves of over 3,000 Union soldiers), The Mount of Victory (one of the highest points and containing less than 30 graves, many from the war of 1812), and Cypress Hills National Cemetery. The last section, where Elton shot his photo, contains about 15,000 graves.
